A polynomial equation is like ax^3 + bx^2 + c = 0 Significant features include how it behaves for x<<0 and x>>0, large negative and positive values of x, and how many zeroes it has, which is how many times it crosses the x axis (y=0) and where the zeroes are. The degree of the polynomial is the largest exponent, here 3, and this tells you that there are up to 3 unique zeroes.
