    look for the LCD! Since you don't know what x is, you can just use any common denominator. One would be (x + 2)(x - 4): (2x + 3)/(x - 4) - (x - 5)/(x + 2) (2x + 3)(x + 2)/(x + 2)(x - 4) - (x - 5)(x - 4)/(x + 2)(x - 4) [(2x + 3)(x + 2) - (x - 5)(x - 4)] / (x + 2)(x - 4) now expand the numerator(s): [(2x² + 4x + 3x + 6) - (x² - 4x + 2x - 8)] / (x + 2)(x - 4) (2x² + 4x + 3x + 6 - x² + 4x - 2x + 8) / (x + 2)(x - 4) organize: (2x² - x² + 4x + 3x + 4x - 2x + 6 + 8) / (x + 2)(x - 4) (x² + 9x + 14) / (x + 2)(x - 4) (x + 7)(x + 2) / (x + 2)(x - 4) cancel out (x + 2) Answer: (x + 7) / (x - 4)

    actually the answer is (x^2+16x-14)/((x-4)(x+2))
