I feel a wet dampness in the middle of my palm. Opening my eyes, all I see is darkness corrupting me. Then my vision becomes clearer adjusting to the darkness. I feel my palm to discover the wet substance only to find out it is sweat. As I try to get up my legs give out and I'm paralyzed. My gut is telling me to run. Only if I could, I say to myself. Then a silvery voice follows.... “You’re going straight to my head, and I’m headed straight to the edge… I pick my poison and it’s you!” I recognize this immediately as the ringtone to my phone and shut eyes tight when I open them I’m in my bed room I think to myself that must be a dream. I answer my phone before it stops ringing.
“Hello? Who is this?"
“Wow can you look at your contact names before you ask? ....IT’S YOUR BEST FRIEND DUHHH!" replied Charlie.
"Omg I'm sorry hey Charlie ....You know u woke me up?" I said with a smirk.
There was a long pause before I heard sobbing on the other end. “Charlie what happened!?!?!? Are you ok? Answer me Charlie…!” “Ye….Yea…Yes Aero…” sobbed Charlie. “Tell me what’s going on…” “I will but I can’t say over the phone ill meet you at your house, be there soon!”
As I wait for Charlie to come over I start to tidy up the house my parents are on a business trip so I have the whole house to myself. Showing that I can clean after myself is a great way to show responsibilities and prove to them that I can be an independent young lady. Not even after five minutes of me wiping the kitchen cabinets, I hear a knock. I jump up in surprised because I was so focused on cleaning I totally forgot Charlie was coming over.
As I slow dragged myself to the door I checked the peephole of the door to make sure it was Charlie. When I opened the door she jumped on me caressing me in a warm hug with tears rolling down her face. She explains to me what happened- Her parents kicked her out because she didn’t complete her college credits so she didn’t have enough credits to finish her degree. We both sit down and I give her a shoulder to cry on and sympathy because I could remember how my parents were academically strict on me back then. After hugging her I explained to her that I’m going to order pizza she nodded yes. After calling up the Italian pizza place and ordering pizza I went to check on her and she was sleeping peacefully on the couch.
I went upstairs to my room and started to reminisce how I met Charlie, we first met at a party my cousin introduced us and we hit it off ever since then. We started talking on the phone and hang out a lot until it became a daily routine. Now weeks later we call each other best friend. I still remember how this girl me and Charlie despised left me a note after the party saying –“Beware of Charlie…In due time you will know.”- I just laughed it off because Charlie is those type of quiet at first but funny and outspoken when you get to know her. Now that day seemed so distant compared to now. I have met Charlie whole family and seen how she has been treated throughout her life. She struggles when people don’t accept her for who she is even though she tries to mask her feelings. In the middle of me thinking I hear whispers in the distance. I can’t make out the words so I grab my bat under my bed and slowly and carefully tiptoe down the stairs when I get there I see the most unusual thing. Charlie was stuffing her face with pizza while watching Netflix and cuddling the couch pillow. The reason I say this is unusual is because Charlie is the type of girl that doesn’t eat if she does eat....it would probably be fruits or veggies. So, it would be an understatement to say I was surprised. I stared at her blankly until she felt my gaze upon her. When she turned around she saw the bat in my hand, she looked back amused and embarrassed. We both started to laugh. I left her so she could continue in peace. When I went to my room I laid down and fell into a fitful dream. I was in a lavender forest, running through the forest I bump into a troll. He looked at me with an evil grin. He took my hand and whispered in my ear “You are -
the chosen one.” My words were stuck in my throat I was so terrified that I couldn’t even speak. He dragged me alongside him and grinned when I tried to resist from moving. His chuckling sounded like sandpaper rubbing against wood. Almost a raucous a sound. I feel a certain presence over shoulders and I try to figure out what it is just as I try to a blinding light covers over me and I open my eyes. I wake up with my curtain wide open, the sunlight washing over me. I don’t even notice the smell of bacon and eggs because I still traumatized about the dream. When I walk down the stairs the savory smells hit me right the face. I don’t even look at the kitchen table to know Charlie cooked a feast. My curiosity gets the best of me and I walk by the island. “Good Morning!” I say cheerfully. Charlie looks back shocked and laughs pauses then says “Morning!” with a huge hug. “I just wanted to thank you for letting me spend a night here…” says Charlie motioning for me to dig in. She didn’t have to tell me twice as I started to grab my plate she slowly walks away. I start to share out my food, my phone starts to ring and I look at the contact name and it’s my mother. “Hello mother… I’m sorry I didn’t call you to tell you how I was doing… You must’ve been worried.” I listen for a response from my mother and all I hear is a recorded voice saying “Don’t eat!” Then static. As soon as my phone hanged up I walk over to the garbage and attempt to throw out the food. Then Charlie walks in and I freeze. She notices my sudden awkwardness and asks me what I’m doing. While I’m facing the opposite of her I say to her my stomach hurts because I ate so much. She smiled and left so I decided to follow her and she went into the living room bathroom. I’m not the type to snoop on people but my gut is telling me to after that phone call from my “mother,” I should keep my eyes around my surroundings. What I hear on the other side of the bathroom is unbelievable …- “Yes, she totally ate the food. Just give it a few minutes and she will be gone and we will complete our mission.”… “Ok… I have to go,” Mumbled Charlie. That was my queue to leave and I called up the police when I reached the attic explaining what I just found out. They explained to me to remain calm and pretend like I ate the food they are already securing the perimeter. I hear Charlie calling my name and I don’t respond. Then I hear a loud thud… I go rushing down to the noise and there is Charlie grinning just like the troll then the lights start to flicker on and off. I try to scream because I can feel her presence behind me every inch I move she comes closer. I cringe and she chuckles as horrible as the troll, I can make out her face as the lights go on and off she looks evil. I say in a friendly voice, “Charlie, now… what is this best friend why are you acting like this?” I try forcing a smile. She only comes closer… the next thing I feel is a sharp blade around my throat and her chuckling. Whispering just like the dream I had the first time when she called my phone, then all the pieces come together she was haunting me in my dreams. She looks into my eyes and grumbles, “You truly are the chosen one we are enemies in the past world… you will understand once you die.” I start to sob at the face death once, reality hits you and notice you are going to die nothing matters anymore. I say silent prayer closing my eyes and bow my head, a voice in mind tells me to say my prayers out loud. I start quietly mumbling then I gained the courage to shout it out and when I open my eyes. I look around only to find the clothes Charlie was wearing on the floor where she once stood with the sharp blade. I’m paralyzed from shock and wonder -Was I imagining what just happened? The clothes and blade shows as evidence that everything was real. The cops barge through the door, frantically searching I allow them to because it’s surreal how Charlie disappeared. After searching for hours I just tell the cops that I made the story up and I’m sorry it’s my Common Hallucinations in Schizophrenia. The cops weren’t buying it so they called my parents and asked them would rehab be good for me. Of course, they say no and the cops left but before they did they told me serious charges can be held against me in court if this happens again. A few months, after this I graduate college I made it in life with my degree, made my parents happy and found a friend in my Lord he will never let me down. He guides me into the light, when I’m stuck in darkness.
