    yes, but I would write it (-5)^3 just to make sure we know we want -5* -5 * -5 (and not - 5*5*5 which gives the right answer, but sometimes it won't)

    subtract that expression from -8 to do that, I pick a simpler problem subtract 1 from 3 can you do that ?

    the point is to get clear what they mean by subtract that expression from -8 that means -8 - expression where expression is (-5)^3 -8 - (-5)^3

    -8 - (-5*-5*-5) -5*-5 is 25. 25*-5= -125 -8 - -125 = -8 + 125 = 117 yes
