Say you have the number 01.023900. Any number that isn't zero is a significant figure, plus any zero that is a placeholder (between two digits that aren't zero). Any zero after the final nonzero digit, if its in a decimal, is also a significant figure. So in the case of the example, there would be 7 significant figures.

Trailing zeros are only significant if there is a decimal. Leading zeros are not significant. Trapped zeros (between two significant figures) are significant. Can you give an example that I can explain how many sigfigs? Do help you understand?
