After watching Visions of Light, I got a distinct sense of what it took for a director to achieve the scenes and angles that he envisions for his piece. As someone who has been in front of the camera rather than the behind it, it’s interesting to “live” the history and hardship behind the skills needed to produce films. Originally, I used to casually watch films with no thought behind the process but, this program guided me to look at film-making as not only a skill but, a medium that can be freshly manipulated or molded in order to achieve the desired outlook of the cinematographer. When most people watch movies they tend to focus on what is in front of them; whether that be the actors or the action. I loved how the program explained the beginning of cameramen and the feats that directors had to go through in order to obtain great footage, for example, Greg Toland who played with lighting and ended up with beautiful scenes for Citizen Kane due to his creative dexterity. It’s evident that film has appreciably evolved over a considerate amount of time. However, with today’s films, I wish to see more risks that those directors and audiences felt at the time when film makers were experimenting. For I feel that is a true cinematic experience.
