To calculate the discounted price, you would do the original price, y, minus 18% of y.

Okay, so you have the item at the original price, y. Correct?
Then it's on sale for 18% off. So you do 18% times y to get how much money off of the price.
Then to find the actual discounted price, you do the original price minus the discount, which is \(y-(18\%)y\)
