i know a positive number divided by a negative number gives you a negative number but i don't know if you can you can divide a negative number by a positive number

In multiplying or dividing, if the signs are different, then it is negative. If the signs are the same, it is positive. But do not get these rules mixed up with adding/subtracting with different signs....those rules are different.
