    Is -3.9 closer to -3 or to -4 ?

    -0.3 is closer to 0 than to -1 your dot is close to -3

    as you move to the left, from 0, you go -1,-2,-3, and so on your dot is between -2 and -3 -2.1 would be a little to the left of -2 -2.5 would be exactly between -2 and -3
