    the second is not a function as it has duplicate x values ( the 9's)

    first find x in terms of y y = 3x + 4 3x = y - 4 x = (y-4)/3 replace x by f(-1)x ( which means the inverse of the function) and y by x so we get ( x - 4) / 3
