    24oz per book (we set the book value as n b/c it is unkown), and 8 oz to add on for the carton.

    The weight of 10 books is 24 multiplied by 10 = 240 oz. So to find the weight of n books, without the carton, we multiply the weight of one book by n, giving 24n. Then we add the weight of the carton, giving 24n + 8.
