  • welshfella
hold on - i got it now

k

for the first one Add up all the numbers and divide by 7 to get the mean for the median arrange them in ascending order. The median will be the middle value ( in this case the 4th value)
welshfella
  • welshfella
what do you get ?
welshfella
  • welshfella
3+4+6+7+9+9+11 = ?
Howard-Wolowitz
  • Howard-Wolowitz
so 7?
Howard-Wolowitz
  • Howard-Wolowitz
for the mean
Howard-Wolowitz
  • Howard-Wolowitz
then I dont know what you mean by saying 4th for median
welshfella
  • welshfella
yes 0 i mean the 4th number in the list 3 4 6 7 9 9 11
Howard-Wolowitz
  • Howard-Wolowitz
oh so it would be mean= 7 and median = 7
welshfella
  • welshfella
the middle number = 7 that is the median
welshfella
  • welshfella
yep
welshfella
  • welshfella
so here the mean and the median are equal
Howard-Wolowitz
  • Howard-Wolowitz
cool, power OS the welsh minds
Howard-Wolowitz
  • Howard-Wolowitz
now the second question is gonna be over our heads
welshfella
  • welshfella
yea well we need to keep the median and the mean equal to 7 This will give us a total of 8 numbers and the only way to make the mean and median equal is to add another 7

Howard-Wolowitz
  • Howard-Wolowitz
Alright so you think you'd add another 7, gotcha
welshfella
  • welshfella
if there is an total of numbers the median is the mean of the 'middle two'.
welshfella
  • welshfella
* an even total' i meant to say
welshfella
  • welshfella
if you add up the 8 numbers it gives 56 so mean = 56/8 = 7
Howard-Wolowitz
  • Howard-Wolowitz
ohhh ok i see
Howard-Wolowitz
  • Howard-Wolowitz
that makes sense ^
welshfella
  • welshfella
for the third one If we add an extra number at the end it makes the median 8 - because the middle 2 values will now be 7 and 9 - do you see that?
Howard-Wolowitz
  • Howard-Wolowitz
no i dont
Howard-Wolowitz
  • Howard-Wolowitz
so you saying add a 8
Howard-Wolowitz
  • Howard-Wolowitz
and that would even it out
welshfella
  • welshfella

Howard-Wolowitz
  • Howard-Wolowitz
ok, that makes it senseible
welshfella
  • welshfella
So the number I've marked X must be high enough to make the mean greater than 8 what number to you think we can make X/
welshfella
  • welshfella
we'll have b numbers and total / 8 must be greater than 8
welshfella
  • welshfella
* 8 numbers
Howard-Wolowitz
  • Howard-Wolowitz
so it could be any number greater then 8 but not 9
welshfella
  • welshfella
no - the total will b 49 + X right ?
Howard-Wolowitz
  • Howard-Wolowitz
no I thought 49 + 7
Howard-Wolowitz
  • Howard-Wolowitz
nvm I was thinking division
welshfella
  • welshfella
no X is an other number
welshfella
  • welshfella
what we must do is solve the inequlaity X + 49 ------ > 8 8 x + 49 > 64
Howard-Wolowitz
  • Howard-Wolowitz
so x>15
welshfella
  • welshfella
(x + 49)/ 8 is the new mean and this has to be > 8
welshfella
  • welshfella
right so a valid number would be 16
Howard-Wolowitz
  • Howard-Wolowitz
hmmm, interesting cause I would of never of gotten by-myself... power of the welsh minds
Howard-Wolowitz
  • Howard-Wolowitz
16 by myself*
welshfella
  • welshfella
lol yw
welshfella
  • welshfella
yes 16 is the number to be added
Howard-Wolowitz
  • Howard-Wolowitz
awesome
