    Question: The circumference of the Earth is approximately 131,000,000 ft. a. Write this number in scientific notation and tell how you knew whether to use a positive or a negative exponent. b. The circumference of Mars is 7.00 x 107. Which planet is larger, and by how many feet? Write the answer in both standard and scientific notation.

    131,000,000. move the decimal place so that there is one digit term in front in your case count how may places you have moved it--8 places 1.31 x 10^8 you should be able to figure out the rest of the questions now.

    @zpupster how do you know whether or not to use a negative on the exponent?

    sorry i had signed off. negative would be .01----- 1.0 x 10^-2 b just move the decimal places over 7 places, write it out and compare with earth circum.
