    First you find the subject.....it is " I ". Then you find the verb......it is " gave " Then you ask the question " gave WHAT ? " .... flowers --- this is your direct object. Then you ask the question " gave TO WHOM ? " ......Serena ... this is your indirect object. Always keep in mind, there has to be a direct object for there to be an indirect object...so if there is no DO, then there is no IO.
