3(4x - 2) = 6x - 3 --- distribute through the parenthesis 12x - 6 = 6x - 3 -- subtract 6x from both sides 12x - 6x - 6 = -3 -- add 6 to both sides 12x - 6x = -3 + 6 -- combine terms 6x = 3 x = 3/6 which reduces to 1/2 when you get a solution of " x = something " or " y = something ", then there is 1 solution. If you would have gotten an answer like this : 2 = 2 or 3 = 3....then it would be infinite solutions. If you would have gotten an answer such as : 2 = 3 or 3 = 4...then there would be no solution.
