2.04 Rocky Shores What are the different zones of the rocky shore?1. High tide zone . This region is only flooded during high tides. Organisms that are foundhere areanemones, barnacles, crabs, isopods, mussels, sea stars, snails.2. Middle tide zone . Thisis a turbulent zone that is unprotectedtwice a day. The zone extends fromthe upper level ofbarnacles to the lower area wherelarge brown algaeexists. Animals located hereare snails, sponges, sea stars, barnacles, mussels, sea palms, crabs, etc.3. Low intertidal zone . This region iscovered with watermost of the time. It isuncovered when thetide is extremelylow. The organisms that live here are not adapted to periods of dryness orextreme temperatures. Lifein this are consists ofbrown seaweed, crabs, mussels, sea cucumbers, sea lettuce, sea urchins, shrimps, snails, tube worms

10.What factors shape the rocky shore?
OregonDuck
  • OregonDuck
Rocky shores are those where rocks are exposed above high tide levels and between high and low tide levels. The main agent acting on rocky shores will be wave action. This will carve out wave-cut platforms, caves and undercut cliffs, causing collapse and backward erosion of the cliffs. Waves act to force water into cracks (Hydraulic cracking), which widens and breaks up the rock. Rocky shores will be most apparent in areas of uplift, where the ground surface is high relative to sea level. The nature of the rocks and their attitude will also influence the land forms that result.

13.Describe these three areas of the rocky shore: •Rock pool •Platform •Boulder field
OregonDuck
  • OregonDuck
rock pool - rocky pools by the sea - are in the intertidal zone - filled with seawater during high tide - exist as separate pools at low tide - also called tide pools - home for sea stars, mussels and clams platform - narrow flat area of rock found along the shoreline - created by the waves (erosion) - most obvious at low tide - covered during high tide - can be covered in sand - can also form at the base of cliffs - waves hit base and erode boulder field - boulders are found where little wave action occurs - shore’s not too steep - boulders roll around and flip over during storms - living things will find themselves underwater or baking in the sun - depends on what side of the boulder
