Which is correct? Mary is known to her friends as "Mare," spends her free time drawing. Mary known to her friends as Mare, spends her free time drawing.

    Are you sure these are copied correctly? Because neither of these would be correct as is

    No I just typed them, why are they incorrect? I'm just wondering about quotation marks around nicknames.

    Well the comma wouldn't be needed but the real sentence I was using does need a comma.

    I could be wrong, but I think it's a sort of mix of them both. "Mary, known to her friends as Mare, spends her free time drawing." I think the reason it wouldn't have quotations around it is because of the fact that Mare isn't in the middle of a name. Ex: Mary "Mare" Smith
