Well the comma wouldn't be needed but the real sentence I was using does need a comma.

I could be wrong, but I think it's a sort of mix of them both. "Mary, known to her friends as Mare, spends her free time drawing."
I think the reason it wouldn't have quotations around it is because of the fact that Mare isn't in the middle of a name. Ex: Mary "Mare" Smith
