What is your goal/aim? Java or C++ are both pretty good languages.. Python seems to be a popular first language. Then there's web languages for websites, like php(back-end / databases), html (hyper text mark up language), css (to give cool style to html), javascript (interactive websites) There are numerous tutorials for all the above languages on both youtube and on google/duckduckgo.

I don't really know what goes on under the hood, but I'll share what kind of applications you can make with them based on my experience. You can use them to do a lot of repetitive tasks extremely efficiently; like to perhaps calculate the sum of prime numbers between 1-1,000,000.. or other problems at projecteuler.net. The possibilities are really limitless.. you can have a program generate 100,000 names, and print them to a text file. Another program could read in that text file and alphabetize it. You can make programs that play music, games, use cryptology, sternography, Image IO (input / output), read/write files, have GUIs, utilize databases. It's a big world.
