American mythologies are legends that originated in the United States and have certain characteristics. These myths are usually set in the past, are filled with strange characters, contain magical or mystical event, and deliver a positive message about its people. In Rip Van Winkle, Washington Irving demonstrates this meaning of American mythology through the setting, characters, and events. Mythologies have evolved from every culture that ever existed and the United States has developed unique ones due to the uniqueness of America itself. We are such a mixed culture; we have our Natives and then we have people from all over the world, especially Africa and Europe, but especially from Africa. ”Rip Van Winkle is a fun, light-hearted American myth. The short tale consists of an exhilarating setting and an extraordinary main character and other exaggerated characters.Rip Van Winkle contains magical, entertaining impossibilities that keep the reader glued to each page. Rip Van Winkle shows good American kindness to everybody, at all times. He shows the extremes of some values, such as kindness. Van Winkle’s immense kindness is portrayed through his desire to help others, and barely make any profit, rather than only helping himself and making a lot of money. An example of an exaggeration of character is Derrick Van Bummel. The school master’s intelligence and fantastic diction is exaggerated when the author says he “…was not to be taunted by the most gigantic wordin the dictionary.”Rip Van Winkle’s most important element making it mythology is mysterious happening of Rip’s disappearance and how it happened. Obviously, human being can’t just disappear for years and randomly wake up with no memory of what happened due to supernatural Dutchmen. Imagining so creates a child-like magic in the story that attracts people of all ages.Rip Van Winkle consists of an important, enticing time in history for Americans, out of the ordinary, exaggerated characters, and mystifying strange events. For these reasons the tale is considered classic American mythology. Out of all the m\American mythology stories I’ve heard, I’d have to say this one is my favourite. shows that American authors started making prose that used American history and tales of fiction to create their own mythological stories. The story of Rip Van Wrinkle has many different characteristics of American myths.
