    || means the distance from zero, which means the number itself except absolute value is always positive, so add a and b, then if that's negative just make it positive and add it to the distance between c and 0 and add does that make sense?

    absolute values are positive.....so first, what is -3 + 7 ??

    -3 + 7 = 4 so now we have : | 4 | + | -15 |......so the absolute value of 4 is 4.....and the absolute value of -15 is 15 (because absolute values are positive even when they say negative. So now your problem just becomes : 4 + 15 = ?? .....any guesses now ?

    do you see how we got : | 4 | + | -15 | ?? even when the absolute value says -15....it is still positive because absolute values are positive. So the problem becomes 4 + 15 ....and that is equal to 19. any questions ?

    you cannot treat absolute value signs the same as parenthesis. Glad to help :)
