What you want to do is isolate the unknown you are looking for. And what ever you do to isolate the variable you have to do to the other side of the equation.
If it were A = L + W then you would subtract L from L +W leaving you with just W. What you do to one side you have to do to the other, so you would also subtract L from A leaving you with A-L = W
