this is the first passegde The Lewis and Clark Expedition In 1804, President Jefferson sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the Louisiana Territory. Jefferson hoped that they would find a water route to the Pacific Ocean. The two men began their journey near St. Louis, Missouri, and traveled west along the Missouri River. Lewis and Clark and a group of about 50 men, including soldiers, traveled on three boats loaded with provisions and peace offerings for the Native Americans. The men carried guns in case they had to protect themselves from unfriendly Native Americans. Sacajawea, a female member of the Shoshone tribe, traveled with Lewis and Clark. She translated the Native American languages to English and vice versa. Lewis and Clark mapped the geography of the West, established friendly relations with Native Americans, and opened up the West to the fur trade. They crossed the Rocky Mountains and then traveled along the Columbia River until they reached the Pacific Ocean in 1805. They returned to St. Louis in 1806.
this is the seconf passage William Clark's Journal Entry May 13, 1804 I sent a message to Captain Lewis at St. Louis to let him know that all of the equipment, supplies, and men are ready for our expedition. We have one boat with 22 oars, one boat with 71 oars, and another boat with 6 oars. Some of our men are soldiers. All of the men are armed with powder cartridges and 100 balls each in case we have to defend ourselves against hostile natives. Everyone is healthy and eager to begin the westward journey down the Missouri River. The boats are loaded with food, drink, and other merchandise. However, I do not think we have enough gifts and supplies for the numerous Indians that we will meet on our journey across the continent.
