Doesn't transitive have to have a direct object?

Long is describing the verb, so it is an adverb which can't be a direct object.

but the sentence is also make sense without the " for the delivery" part . But if we delete the word "long" then there is no sense and the sentence will need a object .

The sentence makes complete sense without the adverb. Have you waited for the delivery? S V Prep Adj OP You have waited for the delivery.
