For this assignment, you need to analyze (examine) what the purpose or function of the setting and character in moving the story forward. For instance, pretend there is a fiction story about a dog and duck who become friends on a farm. The dog has no friends in the beginning because no animals want to be his friends. The farm is such a big place that the dog keep looking for a friend. He finds a duck who wants to be his friend, and so the story ends happily. The setting (farm) drives the story forward. Why? Well, if the story was on an abandoned island, the dog may never find a friend at all, since there is nobody on the island. The story would have been tragic and quite short! The farm, on the other hand, drives the story forward. The dog finds a friend, because the farm is a vast assortment of animals. This is one thing you need to show in your essay. How the setting, where the story takes place, moves the plot of the story forward. That's not all, though. You also need to tell how the characters moved the story forward. Let's say that there are a chicken, a cat and a cow on the farm. The dog asks all these animals for their friendship, and they refuse. How are these characters moving the story forward? If the chicken, cat and cow didn't refuse the dog's friendship, the dog wouldn't have continued to look for a friend. The dog, the main character of the story, also moves the plot forward with his determination to find a friend. If the dog just gave up, the story would not move forward. Now, with since I showed you an example, let me rephrase what your assignment calls for. 1: You need to show how the setting (where the story takes place) moves the plot of the story you are writing about forward. 2: You need to show how the characters in the story you will write about move the plot forward Just choose any fiction story. Your assignment states that you cannot write about a poem or a work of nonfiction. Anyway, for my last point. Your essay needs to be 1 - 2 pages long, and you need to double space it and use Times New Roman, font size 12. I attached a picture of how a very small paragraph would look with double spacing and Times New Roman (font size 12). If you don't know how to double space, here are links on how to enable double spacing for both Microsoft Word and LibreOffice. Your essay should be saved as a .doc file. http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000645.htm https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/23858/how-do-you-get-the-double-space-function-to-work/ Happy writing!
