Why is heartwood darker in color than sapwood? a) Sapwood compresses the heartwood, causing a congestion of xylem cells in heartwood. b) Heartwood is near the center of the stem and is not exposed to sunlight. c) Xylem cells in heartwood accumulate impurities and do not conduct water.
