Sandra Cisneros was born in the 1950's in Chicago, and the book also takes place in Chicago. Although it was published in 1984, it seems to take place sometime in the sixties or early seventies. 1. What was going on in Chicago in the late 60's and early 70’s? 2. What were some common Chicano culture stereotypes that existed during this time frame? What were Mexican-Americans “doing” during this time (working, political involvements, etc)? 3. What was happening politically in Chicago itself, and around the world? Immigration issues, laws, etc?
