The development of rail lines allowed workers more freedom to choose the location of their homes. It became possible to travel longer distances between home and work. Thus, commuting began. As a result, cities grew outward along these rail lines. For example, homes in Philadelphia expanded northwest along the rail line. This region is still known as the Main Line.
