$x^2 - 12x + (12/2)^2 = -5 + (12/2)^2$ = $x^2 -12x + 36 = 31$ = $(x-6)^2 = 31$ =$x-6 = \pm \sqrt31$ therefore $x = 6 \pm \sqrt 31$
