Light is basically a moving electric and magnetic field which is why it's called an electromagnetic wave. The way the fields oscillate is at different frequencies, and this gives light different properties. This is what you see in the spectrum, the range for all light and what it can be, whether it's color you see or if its x-rays, radio waves, or microwaves. http://www2.lbl.gov/images/MicroWorlds/EMSpec.gif
