How are anions and cations arranged in an ionic crystal?

    Anions are surrounded by cations and vice versa in an uniform 3D shape ionic compound tends to be brittle coz liitle force brings same charged ion 'face to face' thus their mutual repulsion pushes each other away hence the lattice (ionic crystals) breaks down
