Cities can provide destinations along sidewalks and open storefronts to encourage walking. New urbanism planning involves the creation of walkable spaces by using certain key principles. Wider sidewalks and green spaces can make walking more pleasant. Closing off certain streets to traffic and making them pedestrian streets decreases traffic, requires more walking, and makes it more pleasant. Five-minute planning (placing living spaces within five-minute walks of services) encourages more walking.
