Th Lusitania was a British passenger ship that carried weapons and such in hidden compartments. When the Germans sank it, there were over 100 Americans were on board. Most of them died. The Brits thought the US would jump into the war at that point. President Wilson was trying to at least appear neutral. The Zimmerman Note was a telegram intercepted by the British. It was from the German foreign ministry to their Ambassador in Mexico. The Brits decoded it and passed it on to the Americans. In the note, the Germans propose that Mexico join with them in the war and attack the US. By the end of the war, Mexico would regain all territories lost in the 1840s, including Texas and most of the US south west. Together, these two events and propaganda put out to incite hatred for Germany, was enough for Wilson to be able to declare. war.
