Life before the Industrial Revolution was largely agrarian and rural. There were few large cities as we know today. Whatever cities were created by trade (largely international) . Life after IR started the move towards urbanization and based on specialized skills. The job content shrunk, creating narrow specializations. (That's just one out of the many you could use)
