From the Richmond Examiner "Kings are usually made to speak in the magniloquent language supposed to be suited to their elevated position. On the present occasion, Lincoln acted the clown."
I understand that Kings are supposed to speak in a way that lets you know they are definitely king and not just a common fellow, but I don't quite understand how I'm supposed to prove that Lincoln has not proven himself to be worthy of leadership. To me he is quite well spoken and he uses great vocabulary. Am I missing something?
As far as the clown statement goes, I don't see how Lincoln acted a "clown", meaning silly I presume. I think he was formal. His wording implied this to me. Again am I missing something?
This has helped me: magniloquent (adj) (outdated and rarely used) pompous. A magniloquent speech is a speech in a pompous language. Magniloquent style makes use of bombast. High sounding words and lengthy sentences mark a magniloquent piece of writing or speech. The author thought that his magniloquent language would impress his readers. Instead, the pompous style tired them and turned them away from the book. The magniloquent speech of the politician made him the laughing stock of the audiences. His bombast tired the audiences who left the place in the middle of the speech.
So, perhaps if Lincoln were to speak in a "magniloquent" manner, then his audience might get lost and spend their time deciphering what Lincoln's saying rather than paying attention to what he's talking about in his speech, which is the whole point. Does this make sense, or is it just me? Also, he might sound too wordy and lengthy, which also might take away from the meaning of his speech and the interest of the audience.
For example, a person of a higher position and/or a higher education, like, a King, I guess, might use this sentence: Please, I implore you! Do be so kind as to assist me with my long procrastinated drudgery. Whereas a more "common" person would say: Help me with my homework please! So thank you, me, I think I've got it from here! I know what I'm going to write for my assignment.
