So, we need to solve the equation for y. We need y to be by itself on the lefthand side of the equation

5y-5?
UsukiDoll
  • UsukiDoll
waittttt... first we need y by itself so first step is to subtract 4x on both sides.
Serenity74
  • Serenity74
Isolate the y just like @UsukiDoll said then you reciprocal it and you get the equation of the line. For example: 3/4x - 2y = 5 Isolate the y so -2y = -3/4 x + 5 Isolate the y y = (-3/4x + 5) / 2 is the equation of the line.

im sorry, like i said, im clueless, even with you helping me, im awful at this

You still don't get it? Do you need another example??

it couldnt hurt
Serenity74
  • Serenity74
Okay lol lets start it simply shall we? 3x + y = 6 You are solving for an equation of the line which is y = mx + b Since we don't have it in that form we have to change it into that form So we isolate the y ( just like the formula of a line looks like) so we bring the 3x on the other side. So y = -3x + 6 (the positive 3x becomes negative since we are brigning it on the other side) (When you bring something to the other side the sign changes. So if it's addition on the left it becomes negative on the right and vice versus. If it's division on the other side then it's multiplication on the right side.

Now lets make it a teensy bit challenging okay? 2x + 3y = 12 Isolate the y (don't worry about the number in front of the y focus on isolating it first) You bring 2x to the other side so 3y = -2x +12 (-2x because you brought to the right side) NOW you isolate the y. Y = (-2x + 12) / 3 (You divide it by three because in order to isolate the y you need to multiply the 3 by one third which gives you 1 so you get y by itself and 3 gets divided.) (Whatever you do on the left you do the same thing on the right.) (If you multiply 2 on the left then you multiply 2 on the right) Sorry if I didn't help.

It's not your fault. I just am not good at any type of math that involves letters or words
Serenity74
  • Serenity74
Now lets go with "hard-hard" 1/2 x + 3/2y = 1 You isolate the y So 3/2y = -1/2x + 1 In order to get rid of the coefficient in front of the y, you use reciprocal. So you multiply it by 2/3 on both sides and you get y = 2(-1/2x + 1)/3 Did it help you though?? Cause that's the most important thing.

It helped as much as it could (for me at least) thank you

  • Serenity74
You sure? If you need more help I could try to give you a better break down of the problem.

i dont want to waste your time
Serenity74
  • Serenity74
Okay so you can solve this problem or do you need me to solve this one problem for you?
Serenity74
  • Serenity74
Oh please don't worry about me, lol I get on here to answer questions...math ones mainly to refresh my memory and maybe solve/help some calculus students with theirs cause math is all about practice, the more practice I get the better it is for.
isuckatschool43
  • isuckatschool43
okay then if you can answer it that would be awesome
Serenity74
  • Serenity74
Lol okay 4x - 5y = 9 Isolate the 5y -5y = -4x + 9 Now you isolate the y y = -4/5x +9/5 <--- correct
Serenity74
  • Serenity74
Let me know if you need anymore help in the future lol peace.

  • isuckatschool43
this is the exact problem ive had before. that isnt an option

  • isuckatschool43
and i dont know why
Serenity74
  • Serenity74
hmmmm let me re look into the problem.
isuckatschool43
  • isuckatschool43
no, that answer is correct, but the choices dont list it
Serenity74
  • Serenity74
Oops! My fault!!!
Serenity74
  • Serenity74
y = 4/5x - 9/5 Is the right answer they didn't change the '-5' sign when they were dividing which in my opinion is mathematically incorrect but in order to get the right answer choice you don't change the sign for this, ask your teacher about the '-5' thing.

  • isuckatschool43
i have asked but she doesnt really have any control over these things unfortunately. thank you for your help though
