It'd be easiest to go through the 6 possibilities one by one until you find the possibility that has the desired value 14. Looking at possibility #6: You've got 6 times (4-4+9), plus 3 added to this product. That comes out to 6 * (9) +3, or 57. Wrong. Do the same thing with the other 5 possibilities until you find the one that produces 14.

It was just a guess

Please, let's not deal in guesses. I'm here to help, but I help you find your own answers thru legitimate math.

C has the value 36, which is not correct.

I really wanna learn how to do it, But i'm also in a big hurry.
mathmale

Can't do much about your being in a hurry. Sorry. choose one of the other answers, and we'll go through it together to see if it has the value 14.

D

Type it out here. Remember "order of operations? rules? Which operation would you do first in D?

D. 6 • (4 – 4 + 9) – 3 Evaluate the quantity within ( ). 4-4+9 = ?

9
mathmale
  • mathmale
Right. What's the next operation you must now perform? Mult. or subtraction?

multiplication
mathmale
  • mathmale
right. Please do that multiplication now. When done, subtract 3 from your result.

So it's not D

My next guess is B
mathmale
  • mathmale
You're correct, but that's not 14. So, D is out. C is out. I'm going to leave y ou for a while; please do the other probelms. Seriously, seriously, please, please, do NOT guess. Guessing won't help you to understand this material. Write out B and decide which math operation should be done 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.

6 • 4 – [4 + (9 – 3)] which operation must be done first? second?
mathmale
  • mathmale
Anything within ( ) must be done first.

1. Parenthesees 2. Exponents 3. Multiplication 4. Division 5. Addition 6. Subtraction
mathmale

Good. In 6 • 4 – [4 + (9 – 3)] which operation must be done first? second?
anonymous
  • anonymous
I said it. That's why I numbered it.
mathmale
  • mathmale
In 6 • 4 – [4 + (9 – 3)] you must do that (9-3) first. What is 9-3?

6

Then you have 6 • 4 – [4 + 6]. Which operation must you do first now?

[4+6]

Yes. 6 • 4 – 10 = ?
mathmale

which op must you do first?

the answer is 14

yes. congrats.

But multiplication

I asked y ou which operation you should do first. Which was that?

That's what the next step was

6 • 4 – 10 yes, mult. 6 by 4 first. You're correct. Nice work!

gotta get off the 'net. see y ou again! bye
