A. Northerners who flooded into the South to take advantage of the unstable political situation and turn it to their own advantage were resented by Southerners after the Civil War. They didn't necessarily agree with abolition, as they were portrayed as mostly out for personal gain. They definitely weren't Southerners, and they didn't "betray" the US.
