So I have a 62% in my math class right now. I have a quiz coming up and a midterm (I'm pretty sure it'll count as two tests). What do I need to do to raise my grade from a D to a C in terms of my grades on the quiz and the midterm?

hi @whpalmer4 could you help me out for a sec?

sounds like an algebra question

or @satellite73 it's really nice you guys are viewing this lol
anonymous
  • anonymous
should i go over there?
whpalmer4
  • whpalmer4
Possibly. We need to know a bit more about how the grades are calculated.
anonymous
  • anonymous
ok, what would you guys need to know?
whpalmer4
  • whpalmer4
Is 70% the cutoff for a C?
anonymous
  • anonymous
yes
whpalmer4
  • whpalmer4
Okay, then you need to get enough points on the test such that your total points / the maximum points possible is at least 70%.
anonymous
  • anonymous
my quizzes are worth 30% and my tests are wroth 50% if that helps
anonymous
  • anonymous
ok..how do i figure that out
anonymous
  • anonymous
oh do you need the total # of points I have in the class now?
whpalmer4
  • whpalmer4
Well, that's the total of your grade, right? 30% of the grade is quizzes, and 50% is tests. That doesn't quite tell us the whole story, because we don't know how many quizzes and tests there are.
anonymous
  • anonymous
so I should add up all the points I have now and then all of the 100s they're out of
whpalmer4
  • whpalmer4
Yeah, you need the total points you have now, and the total points possible up through the test.
anonymous
  • anonymous
up through the midterm?
whpalmer4
  • whpalmer4
You mentioned that 30% is quizzes and 50% is tests — what makes up the other 20%?
anonymous
  • anonymous
the points i have now are 594, lemme see how many total there are
anonymous
  • anonymous
daily activities
anonymous
  • anonymous
900
whpalmer4
  • whpalmer4
And does that include the "daily activities" points?
anonymous
  • anonymous
yes sir
whpalmer4
  • whpalmer4
Can you tell me how many points from each of the 3 categories?
anonymous
  • anonymous
ok so in tests, i have a total of 118 points out of 300. in quizzes, i have 76 points out of 100. however, im going to take a quiz i missed last week tomorrow (which would make the 900 ->1000 but i didn't add it in since it's in as an X right now, which means it's not even totaled into my grade). and then my daily activities are 300 points out of 300.
whpalmer4
  • whpalmer4
so if I'm understanding correctly, you have \[50\%*\frac{118}{300} + 30\%*\frac{76}{100}+20\%*\frac{300}{300} = 62.4667%\]
anonymous
  • anonymous
yes
whpalmer4
  • whpalmer4
And you will retake a quiz worth 100 points? That will make the middle fraction \[30\%*\frac{(76+x)}{200}\]where \(x\) is the number of points you get on the quiz. If you get 100 points on the quiz, that will pull you up to 66.0667%
whpalmer4
  • whpalmer4
Do you have any more opportunities for points coming up? You said there's a midterm which you think is worth 2 tests? Would be 200 points?
anonymous
  • anonymous
yup
anonymous
  • anonymous
that was factored into the 900 points...
anonymous
  • anonymous
is what you're saying there's no way for me to get a C at this point?
whpalmer4
  • whpalmer4
I'm confused — you say you have 118/300 on tests so far. Do those 300 points include this upcoming midterm?
anonymous
  • anonymous
no
anonymous
  • anonymous
wait so then it would be 500 including the 200 points from the midterm
whpalmer4
  • whpalmer4
so when you take the midterm, you will have 118 + hopefully 200 out of 500 points for test scores
anonymous
  • anonymous
yea i think
whpalmer4
  • whpalmer4
Well, if that is true, the expression becomes \[50\%*\frac{M+118}{500} + 30\%*\frac{76+Q}{200} + 20\%*\frac{300}{300}\]where \(M\) is the number of points (out of 200) you get on the midterm, and \(Q\) is the number of points (out of 100) you get on the quiz.
anonymous
  • anonymous
ok..so could we possibly say that i get an 80 on the midterm, however many points that is, and an 85 on the quiz? what would we do then?
anonymous
  • anonymous
wait so it would be 118 + 80 so 298/500 and then 76+85 = 161/200
whpalmer4
  • whpalmer4
Okay, if you get 80% on the midterm, that's 80%*200 points = 160 points 85% on the quiz is 85%*100 points = 85 points Close, you forgot that the midterm counts as two tests...
anonymous
  • anonymous
oh riiight ok
anonymous
  • anonymous
ok so then um what would my final grade be :)
whpalmer4
  • whpalmer4
Your grade would be 71.95% if you did that
anonymous
  • anonymous
really? omg that's great. i mean it's not an A but it's semi-passing
whpalmer4
  • whpalmer4
Because the midterm has a bigger percentage of the grade, if it comes down to getting an extra percent or two on the midterm or on the quiz, the midterm is going to help you more.
anonymous
  • anonymous
ok well, thank you soo much, I really appreciate it! I'll be in and out of here tonight so that's why you'll probably see me lurking lol. Have a nice night!
