Is it really "less than" and not just "less" ?
Miss.Rose
  • Miss.Rose
@terenzreignz I said, less than.
terenzreignz
  • terenzreignz
All right, well, what about the answer? You already answered it, it seems, with your x=16. Or was that also in the book?
Miss.Rose
  • Miss.Rose
It was kind of in the book and kind of not. You see it hinted towards the answer but I used a different website to find the answer. No offence Open Study.
Miss.Rose
  • Miss.Rose
So I am just trying to figure out how to get that answer.
terenzreignz
  • terenzreignz
But it's clear that "one fourth of a number" is easily x/4
terenzreignz
  • terenzreignz
My issue is that if it really says eight LESS THAN one fourth of a number instead of eight LESS one fourth of a number, then x/4 should come first. As in \[\Large \frac x4 - 8 = 4 \]
Miss.Rose
  • Miss.Rose
Okay. But would it matter if 8 was in front of the \[\frac{ x }{4 }\]
terenzreignz
  • terenzreignz
Of course it does. Subtraction is not reversible like addition. as in... 5 - 3 is not the same as 3 - 5
Miss.Rose
  • Miss.Rose
Okay. So next step.
terenzreignz
  • terenzreignz
Next step is to solve it. \[\Large \frac x4 - 8 = 4\]
Miss.Rose
  • Miss.Rose
okay. So according to the other website I use with it placed like this the answer is: x = 48. But I still don't know how.
terenzreignz
  • terenzreignz
Sure. Let's get rid of that denominator 4 by multiplying both sides by 4. \[\Large 4\left[\frac x4 - 8\right]=4[4] \]
Miss.Rose
  • Miss.Rose
I still don't get it.
