well lets do it a different way. what would be a common denominator between them both if the rule is the same this has to happen to the top thats happening to the bottom.

well both have to have the same denominator. so lets go with 2. so if you already have 5/6 and you have 1/3 that needs to be converted into a denominator of 6 right? so how would you get that to happen to the 1/3?

so it would be 2/6 because 1 x 2 = 2 and 3 x 2 = 6 so it would be 2/6. now subtract them. 5/6 - 2/6
