I only just finally understood polynomial division myself recently so I'm not sure if I can explain it that well .-. I can try tho :3 look at the highest power of the thing you are dividing by and compare it to the highest power of the thing you are dividing into so in this case we are comparing 3x^2 and x does that make sense so far? :)

lol I think so.

ok so now I have to think what should we multiply to "x" to make it "3x^2" ?
jigglypuff314
  • jigglypuff314
that would be 3x right? because x * 3x = 3x^2 ? so we multiply through 3x times (x + 6) and get 3x^2 - 18x
ElisaNeedsHelp
  • ElisaNeedsHelp
Yes it be 3x. why do we multiply?
ElisaNeedsHelp
  • ElisaNeedsHelp
You just recently understood this so nvm my questions lol

question*
jigglypuff314
  • jigglypuff314
x times (something) = 3x^2 because of how division works, 3x^2 divided by this (something) = x the values we found would make our division look like this |dw:1450150424583:dw|

I'm horrible at division. Do I only substract now?
jigglypuff314
  • jigglypuff314
yep ^_^ try subtracting 3x^2 + 25x -(3x^2 + 18x) -------------------
ElisaNeedsHelp
  • ElisaNeedsHelp
6x^2 +43x ? If i understand this substraction too then its a blue moon victory.
jigglypuff314
  • jigglypuff314
minusssingggg we are attempting to make the 3x^2 in the big stuff disappearrr
jigglypuff314
  • jigglypuff314
3x^2 - 3x^2 = 0 great now 25x - 18x = ?
ElisaNeedsHelp
  • ElisaNeedsHelp
7x
jigglypuff314
  • jigglypuff314
perfect! so now we have |dw:1450151226378:dw|
jigglypuff314
  • jigglypuff314
now what do we have to multiply to x in order to get 7x ?
ElisaNeedsHelp
  • ElisaNeedsHelp
7 :D lol
jigglypuff314
  • jigglypuff314
YAY so (x+6) * 7 = ? (distributive property)
ElisaNeedsHelp
  • ElisaNeedsHelp
7x+42 ?
jigglypuff314
  • jigglypuff314
great! now note that the minus is also distributive :) |dw:1450151491074:dw|
ElisaNeedsHelp
  • ElisaNeedsHelp
-1
jigglypuff314
  • jigglypuff314
perfect! so your remainder would be -1 and your quotient would be 3x + 7
