Well the Renaissance was kind of like a re-birthing after the dark ages. Which was a period in which disease and government were out of control. So a lot of things caused the dark ages but the most vague and common answer would be the Dark ages :)

Well i found that the government in the dark ages would not except the new age of Christianity. And that a couple years before the Renaissance the government decided to accept the new faith and that gave people more freedom to do what they wanted, SO the difference would be that before... the government would not accept the new faith. But when they did the Renaissance was born which is why its also known as the re-birth of Italy.
